Scripture Union Daily Guide 16 December 2025 Outline

Hosea proclaims series of judgments against Samaria, for rejecting the covenant and the laws, and becoming unfaithful to the Lord their God. The covenant is the basis to their claim to be God’s people. Keeping it enables them to please God and claim His blessing. Breaking this covenant and rebelling against God’s law meant breaking the hedge around them. This gave an opening for the enemy. So, the ‘eagle’ (a reference to the Assyrians) comes over to attack and subjugate them (Hosea 8:1-3).

Hosea sets out God’s accusation against Israel: idolatry which leads to false religion (Hosea 8:4-6). Golden calf idol has been the cause of the spiritual downfall of God’s people over the years. It broke their relationship with God in the wilderness (Exodus 32:4) and at the inception of the nation of Israel (1 Kings 12:28-33). Sowing and reaping as a principle applies in our spiritual life too. False religion is sowing the wind. The harvest can only be disaster (Hosea 8:7). We can never buy God’s favour with our false religion (Hosea 8:13a). The only consequence we face is His judgment (Hosea 8:10b,13b,14c).

And So
Are there serious ungodly issues of which you would have repented but which you are busy covering up with religion?

Insight
* Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

we have an anchor
1. Will your anchor hold in the storms of life,
When the clouds unfold their wings of strife?
When the strong tides lift and the cables strain,
Will your anchor drift, or firm remain?

Refrain
We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Steadfast and sure while the billows roll,
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.

2. It is safely moored, ’twill the storm withstand,
For ’tis well secured by the Savior’s hand;
And the cables, passed from His heart to mine,
Can defy that blast, thro’ strength divine.

3. It will surely hold in the Straits of Fear—
When the breakers have told that the reef is near;
Though the tempest rave and the wild winds blow,
Not an angry wave shall our bark o’erflow.

4. It will firmly hold in the Floods of Death—
When the waters cold chill our latest breath,
On the rising tide it can never fail,
While our hopes abide within the Veil.

5. When our eyes behold through the gath’ring night,
The city of gold, our harbor bright,
We shall anchor fast by the heav’nly shore,
With the storms all past forevermore.

Closing Prayer
I lay before you, dear Lord, every idol that lures me away from you.
